Career Advice

Your career can be a long, winding journey with many twists, turns and forks in the road. I have learned an awful lot over my 27+ years by sitting through a lot of interviews (as an interviewer and interviewee), updating a lot of resume's (not just my own) and speaking with a lot of different people within HR, job placement agencies, hiring managers, etc.  I’ve worked in many different sectors (large retail, financial services, etc.) for both large, global companies as well as small start-ups. I’m hoping to translate these experiences into tips and recommendations as well as lessons learned to help improve your interviewing skills, resume' writing abilities and job searching techniques.  These tips are based on my experiences and what I have learned along the way, but they do not make me an expert nor are they infallible.  Your mileage may vary since your career path has most certainly been different than mine.  I would suggest taking these tips and combine them with your own experiences and research to find the right balance that works for you.

Rob at Room362 has put together a list of articles from various infosec professionals discussing a variety of topics such as how to get started in infosec, hiring your first security professional, and much more.  I definitely recommend going through Rob's collection, titled "Start in Infosec".

Lenny Zeltser has great information regarding resume’s, interviewing, and salary negotiations at “Tips For Getting the Right IT Job”.
